Advance Wars' Delayed Switch Release Might Finally Be Reporting For Duty

This would be be a pleasant surprise. I was starting to think they forgot about this poor game!

Even as a huge fan of the originals that was really looking forward to this remake (but hates the price point), and replayed the originals to build up (and eventually lost) hype for this, I'm not really sure where I stand on this right now. Their reason for delaying was so stupid (there is always war as long as humanity remains the utterly destructive, power hungry, fear mongering, false authority obeying, stupid species it is, and always war games as long as there will be games). Maybe they manage to build up hype again. Or maybe I'll play Wargroove, Tiny Metal, Triangle Strategy, Fire Emlem Three Houses I still haven't played,... And get this one cheaper later. If Nintendo learns how to properly do a sale.

I'm really excited about this one. I've been getting into the Strategy/ Tactics genre a lot more lately and the first Advance Wars on GBA has been one of my favorites so far.

Hopefully, with the several added months of delay, they've polished and improved the game further than it would have been on release. However, Nintendo also likes to sit on their games once they're finished, so I dunno.

@Dom_31 I have bought FEE and will be buying TOTK and AW 1+2 Reboot as well. After a shocking year for releases last year there's a great one ahead of us, happy days!

I got tired of waiting and replayed the originals. with new Theatrhythm and Zelda on the horizon it'll be a hard sell for me if they release this year, but I suspect Nintendo is delaying now because they're waiting for the most opportune time to launch it.

@Shambo I thought Tiny Metal was a complete disappointment, no air units(maybe there was one helicopter), and no navel units whatsoever. The maps were kind of bad too.

@ArcticEcho yeah it's definitely no competition to Advance Wars or Wargroove on an equal field. But I got it cheap, I have Wargroove, and I have the gorgeous original Advance Wars games, so next to paying 60€ for a visual overhaul of what I still have, Tiny Metal is, in its own standards, a fun game. I like the lock on/focus fire mechanic a lot. Character designs and modern warfare theme are also appreciated (again, no match for AW's character design). A new AW with CO's on the field as in Wargroove, and lock on/focus fire as in TM would be great... But this remake is not that either...

Sadly there's no way these games are going to sell well since they won't have a fair marketing push. Which sucks because I was hoping they would do well enough so we could get the Dual Strike (AW3) campaign as DLC. It's odd to release a game collection without doing the full trilogy.

What about releasing the game now? All this nonsense just because they wanted to virtue signaling.

@Shambo Man it's stupid when things get delayed due to unrelated current events. I remember season 4 of Total Drama was delayed by almost a year because of that... tsunami that happened in Japan during 2011???

The Ukraine crisis isn’t over though…? Why is Nintendo being “insensitive” and not waiting until there is peace in the region first like what was obviously their original intent?

It’s like this delay was just a big waste of time that accomplished absolutely nothing. They really are doing everything in their power to make sure this game is sent out to die when it eventually releases with how much initial interest was killed and new competition that popped up.

Rwalistically there is a very big PR difference in releasing it in 2023 vs releasing it shortly after a war broke out involving a nation the game parodies in a cartoon manner through Olaf and Blue moon. Sadly the war has being going on so long that its now become normalised as opposed to the shocking event it initially was.

@Dom_31 Actually after walking away from FE: Engage after roughly 25 hours of bland, predictable storyline, awful dialogue, and a slew of grinding for Emblem SP, Bond points, etc. that made every visit to the Somniel take too long and "activities" which weren't fun to begin with, I'll happily jump over to Advance Wars if/ when it arrives. Not only that, but I suspect that the multi-player will prove to be a huge hidden gem for AW with players.

Nintendo has completely lost their way with Fire Emblem where I'm personally concerned; Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn were leaner on presentation but vastly superior in terms of story, characters, and keeping the focus on the SRPG aspect. Sometimes "less" is actually more.

Before I get the common rebuttal of “but there is no guns! It’s TOTALLY different” you just need to take a look at all the war games that released between then and now with guns to see that argument is stupid. Modern Warfare 2 Remastered [which was still 2022 btw] even still had the “No Russia” mass shooting airport level of Russians shooting up innocent people. I’m sure I don’t need to elaborate the irony of the “you can’t cross this questionably morally wrong line during this arbitrary timeframe” sentiment.

So even in that context Nintendo dropped the ball hard with the delay that made zero sense. We still don’t even have an actual release date for this game so put that into perspective on top of Ukraine is STILL on people’s mind for various reasons including sending boatloads of money we don’t have every month.

@Dom_31 if Fuga 2 (whose predecessor didn't even get its budget back in sales) has the guts to launch in TotK's vicinity, Nintendo's own franchise should have even fewer consequences to fear.

I really don't like talking politics, but whether the decision to delay was right or not, it doesn't matter. It's a game, that we can all moan or not moan about being delayed, discuss if we are still interested or not. A video game, that we will be able to play eventually. The people that lost their lives in this mess don't have that luxury, and the ones that are lucky enough to have their lives must be dreaming of talking on a forum about games right now, rather than the hell they must be going through, perspective matters.

@AtlanteanMan i know your entitled to your opinion about fire emblem engage but its nowhere near as bad like your suggested but the only thing i have issue with is they alway kills off the main MC parent which i think has been overdone i think the queen would of been a force to be reckon with as a side unit with the main mc party through out the story.

This game was the absolute nuts on GBA probably my favourite srpg of all time. Think they should release it soon, just get it out there, it’s been ready for ages and Ukraine does not care about a cartoony video game.

I was really exited for a long while, but then I replayed the GBA games and while they are fantastic, I don't know if I want to replay the games just for the updated visuals. We shall see, maybe if we get some surprise bonus content.

This was probably one of the dumbest delays I can think of, where the reason for delaying it made no sense. Some people can put on a vain display to justify it in their own minds, but there was never a good valid reason for delaying this over a war breaking out somewhere on the globe. If anything it shows off the hypocrisy of how they only care about war when it effects western nations.

@nhSnork What, would you have had "no sarcasm implied" had I stopped playing after a couple of hours as opposed to trying to stick with a game I payed $60 for and give it a fair chance? If you enjoy your own experience with it, that's what matters. But don't casually dismiss someone's opinion (that's apparently shared to at least some degree by a lot of other players going by numerous posts I've read here on NL) as invalid. At least I took the time to spell out why Engage hasn't clicked with me personally.

They’ll announce the date being close to the one year anniversary then immediately toss the game into the void when this doesn’t go over well, people were saying it would play out like this months ago and the pieces are lining up for this.

I actually would like to play this, but if it comes out in March I'll be playing like 3 other things.

I was interested in this game back in December 2021 and still had interest after the delay to April 2022...but now, after the appeasement to a side of Twitter, I'm not interested unless Nintendo has brought in more content to the game. I also now have the original games on my Wii U which I shortly bought after this game's delay last year. If Re-Boot Camp has just been kept on a shelve during this time, my money can be kept in my wallet.

Fire Emblem Engage just released and Teaes of the Kingdom is set for March, what are they thinking? This should have been held back until Q3 or Q4 2023. They might as well be taking it behind the shed releasing in in this quarter.

@I-U This is a low-priority IP that was handed off to a third-party studio to develop, there's no way they added additional content.

@JayJ The first game already had unfortunate timing with 9/11, it makes sense why Nintendo wouldn't want to repeat that with what is meant to be their attempt to revive this franchise.

@Axecon The odds were already stacked against this remake before etheh delays. Fans were already very critical of the weird artistic choice WayForward went with this, oh and wort noting, WayForward has never done a tactical game before. And charging a full $60? Nah, these facts alone guaranteed a mediocre reception, the delays simply made an unfavorable product worse.

@Serpenterror Maybe if the game didn't look so terrible and had more going for it. I don't think Reboot Camp is going to be the hidden gem on the Switch people look back on for decades to come, it's a forgettable TRPG in a sea of much superior games.

I sure hope so. I've only played Days of Ruin and really enjoyed it. I'd love to play the GBA games.

On the contrary, it was doomed from the start when Nintendo tapped WayForward (a studio that has never done a TRPG before) to helm the project. Fans were already scrutinizing the graphics, rightfully so might I add, and the $60 price tag was the final slap to the face.

That "initial interest" you mentioned was incredibly niche and more people talked about the delays than the actual game itself.

@MrHonest You do realize Fire Emblem Engage just released last week, right? Releasing Reboot Camp right now would be the worst decision, pitting two of their own TRPGs against one another. Better to wait unless you really want Reboot Camp to fail.

@BenAV They had the perfect release window to drop it in last year too - August 2022. The only competition that entire month were non-Nintendo titles; PAC-MAN WORLD: Re-Pac and Two-Point Campus.

@Thief I never said the game was gonna be a success. This wasn’t gonna sell like a FE title regardless if Wayforward was involved or not. Just whatever amount of potential it DID have [regardless how little] long since flushed down the toilet since delays.

Then Nintendo will have surprised Pikachu face and act like “there is no real interest in this IP” and continue to just do FE for strategy games

Nintendo made a PR decision based on protecting its image. I love advance wars myself and hope they will release it already but I see why it was delayed,same thing happened with advance wars due to 911 in many markets if I recall correctly.
Modern Warfare was in late October when some time had passed. Also Activision Blizzard doesnt have much of a reputation to protect from public scrutiny after its scandals

I hope it does shadow drop soon. Been waiting for this one since it was originally announced.

@Arawn93 FE never stopped being the priority for strategy games, Nintendo handing Reboot Camp off to a third-party studio and not bringing it over to Japan confirmed that much. And I'm sorry, but I never saw much "potential" in this from the start. The graphics were disappointing, and from what I saw, it was pretty bare-bones compared to other TRPGs kn the platform. And imagine paying the same price for this as you would Fire Emblem Engage or Triange Strategy - that's what really gets me.

Definitely going to buy this, but also definitely going to wait for a deep discount on it as well.

@JayJ Alright then, what makes Advance Aars better? It's been MIA for 15 years and Reboot Camp isn't even getting brought over to Japan. When I think of top of the line TRPGs, Advance Wars doesn't come to mind. Is it bad? No. But I haven't heard a convincing argument for why it's better than Fire Emblem.

@Thief for starters speaking from the Awakening argument, the battle system of AW is waaaaay more complex than just FE’s weapon triangle. Sword/Lance/Axe … which was basic AF.

Even Intelligent Systems director said that the rock-paper-scissors system was just basic and unrealistic for a game like FE.

Advance Wars is waaaaay more strategical in the same level as a chess match. In which you have more than 40 unique units with different capabilities, features, weaknesses and advantages.

FE became popular because of the story and the dating simulator it transformed into. But the core gameplay is fundamentally weaker than Advance Wars.

In the strategic gameplay Advance Wars was and will always be superior. I will be comparing AW to Awakening because we haven’t had a recent entry to compare it against something like Engage or the most recent entries.

Exciting if true. I love other SRPGs like Fire Emblem, Triangle Strategy, etc., but there's really nothing out there that can match Advance Wars for me.

Physical only for me on this just in case they decide to cancel it post release. If you think I'm kidding, I'm not. Digital used to be the only way I'd go. After losing my entire Xbox library because MS decided to indefinitely lock my account for reasons that are completely unbeknownst to me, I trust no company and digital "purchases".

@Arawn93 MW2 Remastered was 2020.

The story of Advance Wars will always be goofy and exist only to set up the next map you play through, but I personally always enjoyed it. The real dark horse attraction AW: Reboot Camp has will be, mark it down, the multi-player. Even though there's an overly basic rock/paper/scissors aspect to the unit mechanics, between the ability to make your own maps and test your strategy against other human opponents, I think there will be enough depth to hook a lot of folks. Do yourself a favor and DON'T overlook it at your next get-together once it comes out.

For anyone hungry for something similar to AW, the best console turn-based strategy series I've personally ever played is Daisenryaku (Grand Strategy), specifically Daisenryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics Exceed for Playstation 2 and XBox and later the Japan-only Daisenryaku Exceed 2 for PS3. The former can be found for probably under $10 on Amazon or eBay, and it garnered mediocre review scores for its basic 3D models (which look like single-color units on a tabletop war game) and bland campaign...but those reviews never mentioned the INCREDIBLE multi-player. Hundreds of real life unit types across several real nations, a full map editor, and the ability to play with up to four players in any combination of human and AI- controlled...and unlike Advance Wars, the units' algorithms reflect their real world capabilities; instead of tank = tank, a squadron of M1A2 Abrams will wipe the floor against older T-72s but have a harder time against T-80s, Leopards, or Merkavas. I used to have a group of coworkers who tried it with me, and not only did we end up playing hundreds upon hundreds of hours in sessions that sometimes ran over 10 hours and into the wee hours of the morning, but every one of them bought their own copies. I'm talking about 6 or 8 people here; that says a LOT about an old PS2 title when I had a shiny new PS3 sitting there available to play.

Just a reminder that sales figures don't always tell the whole story. Some of the greatest videogames ever made may never see a sequel or remake again because not enough gamers knew about them or gave them a chance. But for what it's worth, I think AW: Reboot Camp is going to do fine when it finally releases.

Man, do I hate, hate, HATE the timing of this potential release.

Advance Wars was the funner game IS does between it and Fire Emblem (Though Codename STEAM still tops both), and opposed to releasing where there is room for the IP to grow, it gets released in between Fire Emblem, a growing flagship title for Nintendo and the god of adventure games, Zelda.

The sales are going to look bad in comparison, and Nintendo may just "F-Zero" it into oblivion.

Whatever the timing of its release, if a franchise is important to you, VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET and support it. You may not be able to control a game's overall sales figures, but at least your money went toward telling the publisher there is a market for it.

A couple of tips that go far in helping a "niche" release:

1) DON'T wait for the game to go on sale; BUY IT IMMEDIATELY. This is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT and a lot of gamers apparently don't realize it, but publishers gage consumer interest based upon full-price sales within a certain time window from release. Yes, it's more expensive, but necessary if it might make the difference in ever seeing another entry. If too many sales come from bargain bins or steep discounts it impacts both a publisher's bottom line as well as their confidence in an IP's actual validity where consumer interest is concerned. By the way, I know this from having personally corresponded with developers, including higher-ups who were in charge of sales and marketing, who were kind enough to respond to my inquiries regarding potential projects.

2) Word of mouth: After reading its reviews I decided to purchase Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3, and it turned out to be one of my favorite games ever. So I showed it to no less than four coworkers, who ALL ended up buying their own copies. The exact same thing happened with Daisenryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics Exceed for the PS2...and this was long after the game was only available on the secondary market! If you have a great game you love, be sure to share it with others. They may just keep it going.

You may not move the numbers much on your own, but at least you can honestly say you put your money where your mouth was. And if enough people do the same it WILL make the necessary difference.

I still have my preorder at a local electronics megastore for this. Been waiting for almost a full year.

Come on Nintendo, announce the release of this in a Direct. January has been a gloomy month.

@AtlanteanMan I give due credit to the markers of personal resonance (nothing can be fun for everyone), but epithets like "bland storyline" and "awful dialogue" are still fanspeak that usurps and misuses literary terminology to exaggerate aforesaid lack of personal fun to have. And at least in my experience, it has been thrown at one too many games that, upon closer inspection, not only defied such accusations but proved downright impressive on multiple fronts. Which is why I wasn't even joking above - you put enough fanspeak in your opinion that I didn't "dismiss" it but outright found it boosting my expectations of the complete opposite in practice.

If that doesn't sit well with you, all I can advise is saying "I didn't like the dialogue and was bored by the story and the amount of gameplay needed to move it forward since a lot of said gameplay didn't really hook me either" without relying on pseudocritical jabs. It's something we all have ugly track records and continued lapses in - myself sadly included, - but it's no more rocket science than, say, making sure to avoid strong language in public.

Not intending to start the Direct hype train but thinking February may be the month. Would expect Advance Wars to get a mention.

Wargrove scratched that itch, but I will still be getting this when it finally launches. Might be a 'wait for a sale' one for me though. So much to play, so little time.

I hope all of this hasn't snuffed the hope of a new AW game down the line.

It's coming, and man I can't wait. One of my favourite series of all time. I put hundreds of hours into the originals, will likely do the same with this one.

I said it before and I'll say it again.
Delaying this game because of the war was an extremely stupid move. It doesn't help anyone affected by the war, and the game's release wouldn't have caused any harm to anyone.
All this did was ultimately hurt the game's sales by making people forget about it.

@Shambo Well said! I loved the originals and was excited for this to come out (but like you, not excited about the price point). Now, I've kind of moved on. The reasoning for this not coming out is terrible. Meanwhile, COD is one of the best selling games!

@FantasiaWHT the game was completed months before release (Nintendo does this every so often, then waits for the “right” moment to launch when it makes sense for their release schedule; even if you don’t believe the game was completed and sitting there waiting, at the very least is was ready at launch because we know of people who were able to download it from eShop and played it (Nintendo removed the game from their account a few days later).

@nhSnork I wasn't trying to be hyperbolic in my description of FE: Engage's writing (and again, a lot of other players have used similar "fanspeak"). I don't know whether you've played the game yet, but if and when you do, I humbly suggest that you compare its story and dialogue with the likes of Valkyria Chronicles or even FE: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. The latter two's support conversations in particular are night and day from Engage on two crucial fronts: A) they're pertinent to the storyline and B) help to flesh out the characters and their motivations in meaningful ways. In some cases they even provide clues on how to beat upcoming maps or bosses.

If you'd like me to cite an example of "awful dialogue", let's see...how about characters discussing "strength training" with teacups. Oh, and said characters are so one-note that literally every line they speak has some mention of "muscle-building" or "exercise" in it, including their in-battle remarks after making a kill. There's no depth or development there, nothing that really feels HUMAN or genuine, and as an aspiring writer myself who's had to endure some harsh critiques in my personal growth, I can tell you without reservation that it's a cardinal sin in writing. The truth is that some of the dialogue in Engage is actually worse, to the point of being cringe-inducing, and no, not just in that familiar quirky, Japanese humor way. Maybe I could cut FE: Engage some slack for being "just a videogame" if so many other games...including its predecessors...hadn't done so much better.

I've been gaming for 40 years now across most of the platforms that have existed and probably thousands of games; while I'm still passionate about the hobby and avidly go to bat for IPs that I feel haven't had a chance in too long (just ask anyone who's read my remarks here toward Sega and that mountain of incredible RPG franchises they're just ignoring), if anything I'm jaded by a lot of things I see in the industry's practices and how they've bastardized the SRPG genre in particular in an effort to give it wider appeal. What you term "fanspeak" I define as simply giving an honest personal take. I've seen good (and GREAT) writing enough by now to be able to tell the difference between it and when a company phones it in...and I believe I'm not alone when I say Nintendo definitely did with a lot of Engage's dialogue in particular.

Now, whether what I've said "boosts your expectations of the exact opposite" or even if your actual experience proves to be the exact opposite is completely up to you. Everyone's mileage varies on a given game based on their own tastes and experience. But I'll stick with my descriptions of Engage because they're my own unfiltered and completely honest opinions; I didn't make them to satisfy yours or anyone else's criteria, I simply said what I felt. To each their own.

They might as well further delay it because with tactics ogre, fire emblem engage and sparks of hope, I'm tactically oversaturated.

50€ is too much for me. I hope it will be reduced to a reasonable price.

The popular conspiracy theory in my friend group is that this remake was turning out absolutely BAD and Nintendo was willing to scapegoat the war for more time to work on it and get it up to snuff.

I think this may very well have some merit.

I’m mildly interested in trying this Advance Wars collection out, but the original GBA pixel art style was so much more endearing than this plastic toy aesthetic in the remake at least visually. Hopefully they’ve improved it since the long delays. If so I may give it a try… probably on sale though.

@Dom_31 A lot of gamers buy numerous games throughout the year. I'm not saying that means this will sell well, but this month's release of Fire Emblem and the future release of Tears of the Kingdom certainly won't be enough to slow this down if people want it. Not to mention that tens of millions of Switch owners aren't even Zelda fans to begin with. I could see more crossover in the Fire Emblem department for obvious reasons, but they're different enough and it's not like the would have released the same week or anything.

I wish this remake keeps the 2D visuals but improved it with 1080p resolutions and more animated sprites but yeah, I'm still looking forward to this game 😃

FE Engage and Advance Wars Reboot camp release this year would make Ninty a lock for best SRPG again

I am absolutely staggered by the lack of compassion shown by many in this thread, the game was delayed for very real reasons and right ones too, think of humanity please, an the people that have lost their lives and are suffering and sadly will continue to do so.

This is only a video game, an lives and peace are far more important.

In a time you absolutely don't want to upset an unfortunate unhinged world super power, you don't then do so by releasing a parody of them at the time it was all kicking off.

While yes I do think that ship has sailed and they could release it now with no issues, then and in the third of the year post it, they absolutely couldn't.

I am also rather shocked how many people assume a turn based strategy game is an SRPG too, it really isn't. Sure you can still compare it to FE, but that isn't exactly fair, it's more comparable to Wargroove, Tiny Metal an other games of that ilk, where there isn't really that many.

@Axecon It was never a trilogy to begin with. The series has been around since the Famicom and had entries on the Super Famicom and Game Boy as well. Each game was named after its system, so "Famicom Wars", "Super Famicom Wars", "Game Boy Wars", and of course, "Advance Wars", called so because it was on the Game Boy Advance. The DS game in Japan is called "Famicom Wars DS" (don't know why they didn't go with "DS Wars"), but the numbnuts at Nintendo of America were like "let's call it Advance Wars again because people think that's what the series is called!" These are the same people that brilliantly removed the subtitle from FE7 in America to make people think it wasn't a sequel despite the first FE game having a subtitle in Japan. So basically, NoA made the series confusing for American gamers.

@Makinaki Oh I knew the series has quite the history (the Smash Bros assist trophy is from the original games, not the GBA version), but those three games (Advance Wars, Black Hole Rising, and Dual Strike) all share the same universe, story, and characters. Also they share relatively the same gameplay, hence, why I referred them as a trilogy.

Delayed to 2024 after war between the Falklands and Fermanagh. not the rest of the UK and Ireland just them.
